Tip Tuesday: How To Keep Your Apples From Browning

Apples have become a special treat that Lily and I share in the afternoons while we look through books, stack blocks, or sing along with The Wiggles. Apples are a healthy snack for the both of us. Coring an apple and slicing it is just as easy as getting a cup and pouring goldfish or animal crackers in it.

DON’T get me wrong, I give Lily goldfish…she loves them…I just hate cleaning up the itty bitty smashed yellow crackers. I also hate the way those crackers and other snacks find their way into my mouth. Even if I’m not hungry, somehow I end up munching on some animal crackers. I would rather find myself nibbling on an apple.

Today’s tip is all about keeping an apple from browning while you eat it or store it in a Ziplock bag. If Lily and I are going to share an apple at that moment, then after I core it and slice it, I put a few drops of lemon juice over them and toss to coat. Trust me you won’t taste the lemon!

Another way is to toss the apple slices in a bowl of water and salt. You don’t need much salt (maybe ½ teaspoon) and just like the lemon juice you won’t taste it! If you want to try another way place the apple slices in a Ziplock bag with Sprite, 7Up, or ginger ale. Keep them in for about five minutes (or even a few hours!!), drain and pat dry with a paper towel before you serve them.

Hopefully today’s tip will help keep your apple from browning whether you want it as a snack or serve it with other fruit with a cheese platter.
